Although the festival is ending, royal azalea is still in full bloom. I have visited the Gunpo Royal Azalea Festival of Gunpo Royal Azalea Hill for 2 years in a row. More visitors came to enjoy the 2019 Gunpo Royal Azalea Festival than last year. I think the warm weather attracted more people this weekend. Gunpo Royal Azalea Hill is well known as a tourist destination in the suburbs of Seoul, so many people visit this place by subway. I also took the subway, and I could see the hill from the train when it had passed Sanbon Station and almost reached Surisan Station. It was just a few seconds, but I could see the hill full of royal azaleas, so I could easily recognize the of Gunpo Royal Azalea Hill, the venue of 2019 Gunpo Royal Azalea Festival.

It takes 10 to 15 minutes to walk from Surisan Station (Exit 3) to Gunpo Royal Azalea Hill. It’s easier to walk from Surisan Station on Line 4. Take Surisan Station Exit 3 and go straight for 10 to 15 minutes. You will then easily find Gunpo Royal Azalea Hill. It’s very easy to go to the hill by subway. If you are looking for a tourist destination in the suburbs of Seoul that you can visit by subway, Gunpo Royal Azalea Hill will be a perfect choice. I visited the hill on the weekend, so there were a lot of people visiting the Gunpo Royal Azalea Hill by subway. Generally, Surisan Station is very quiet, but the subway station was very crowded with people heading to the hill for the festival. I visited the Gunpo Royal Azalea Hill on the last day of the festival, so I was worried that the flowers might already be gone. Fortunately, the royal azaleas were just then in full bloom. You don't have to worry even if the festival has ended. You can enjoy bold pink and purple royal azaleas on the Gunpo Royal Azalea Hill from Labor Day to the first week of May, which is the golden week including Children's Day. If you don't want to go far away but hope to enjoy the weekend in the suburbs of Seoul in May, I recommend that you visit the Gunpo Royal Azalea Hill. It only takes 10 to 15 minutes to walk from Surisan Station on Line 4.

There was a parking lot near Gunpo Royal Azalea Hill, the venue of the 2019 Gunpo Royal Azalea Festival. Many people drove to the venue on the weekend, so the parking lot was very crowded and the roads were congested. I didn’t have to worry about getting stuck in traffic since I took the subway, but the people who drove to the festival venue seemed to have experienced inconveniences due to traffic jams. I recommend that you use public transportation instead of driving to go to the festival. As I mentioned above, you should go to Surisan Station Exit 3 (Line 4). Or you can take intra-city bus number 541, 11-5, 917, or 5623 and get off at Royal Azalea Hill/Royal Azalea Park.

An outdoor stage stood at the center of Gunpo Royal Azalea Hill. A variety of festival events were held at the stage as the centerpiece. You can also find some interesting programs going on behind the stage. The festival officially ends today, so you may not be able to enjoy the festival programs after this, but I think the highlight of the Gunpo Royal Azalea Hill is the royal azaleas in full bloom. It’s still the peak season for royal azalea, so you can enjoy the flowers until next week.

A lot of people were enjoying the weekend at the Gunpo Royal Azalea Hill. All the trails of the hill were full of people taking photos and looking around at the flowers. Although the trails were a bit narrow, it didn't feel uncomfortable to look around at the hill since there were observation decks where you could rest here and there. It has been 20 years since the Gunpo Royal Azalea Hill was created. It’s been 21 years by this year, so the royal azaleas seemed to have grown a lot. At the hill, I could see purple royal azaleas everywhere, which are the most common type of royal azaleas. Red royal azaleas were planted between purple ones, which made the view even more impressive. The royal azaleas grew as high as my shoulders. The tall plants showed that it has been 21 years since the Royal Azalea Hill was created. The hill filled with royal azaleas was more impressive than I had expected. I enjoyed the spring weather, walking along the trails around the hill. Temperatures have been around 20°C during the day lately, which is perfect weather for a stroll. If you are looking for a tourist destination in the suburbs of Seoul, I recommend that you visit the Gunpo Royal Azalea Festival.
