This place expands 4,950m2 under the theme of “a story of a fairyland.” Korea’s largest wave illumination show and swimming dolphins and the fortress of the Little Mermaid decorate the festival of lights with waltz music. Nature & Star Observatory in Gapyeong

The Nature & Star Observatory, located in Gapyeong-gun at the optimal site for observing the sky at night, offers visitors a fascinating opportunity to view the shining stars, constellations and planets of our universe.

The observatory is equipped with various observation facilities including a Maksutov 16-inch optical telescope, a Maksutov Newtonian, a Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope, refracting telescopes, binoculars, solar filters (for observing a solar prominence), eyepieces and so on.

The Nature & Star Observatory runs a variety of astronomical observation programs including a basic family/group program for one night and two days, a vacation camp for two nights and three days, and a children’s day program for kindergarten kids.

 Jarasum Island’s Auto-camping Site

Located along the beautiful Bukhangang River in Gapyeong-gun, Gyeonggi-do, the Jarasum Island Auto-camping Site, which served as the venue for the 2008 FICC Gapyeong International Camping and Caravanning Rally, is an eco-friendly leisure campground that boasts the largest and best facilities in the capital region.

Jarasum Island was formed on the Bukhangang River as a result of the construction of Cheongpyeong Dam, in 1943. It actually consists of three separate islands called Jungdo, Seodo, and Namdo, and two more affiliated islands. Although the island was originally called Junggukseom (China Island) because the area was cultivated by a community of Chinese people after the 1945 Liberation of Korea, it was renamed ‘Jarasum’ by the Gapyeong-gun County Geographical Naming Committee in 1986 as it faces a hill that is said to resemble a jara (Korean word for ‘terrapin’).

The Jarasum campsite is equipped with various camping facilities including mobile homes, caravans, a caravan site, and an auto camping site as well as common facilities including a communal kitchen, toilets, shower rooms, and a laundry room. The entire facilities are operated according to a reservation system, and can be reserved at the campsite’s Internet homepage.

Ewhawon Garden, an ecological theme park, is situated right next to the camping site. Jarasum Island is also widely known as the venue of the annual Jarasum International Jazz Festival, which is held every October.

Yumyeongsan Natural Recreation Forest

Yumyeongsan Natural Recreation Forest is located in the valley at the entrance to Yumyeongsan Mountain in Gail-ri, Seorak-myeon, Gapyeong-gun, Gyeonggi-do. Opened in 1989, the recreation forest can accommodate up to 3,000 people per day (with an optimal capacity of 2,000).

This magnificent forest consists of a natural forest zone with many oak trees and an artificial forest zone with larches and Korean pine trees. In addition, the valleys and oddly-formed rocks and stones create a pleasant harmony with the white oaks and maple trees along the walking paths. In particular, diverse plants and vegetables including local specialties such as chwinamul (wild aster), bracken, deodeok (roots of mountain herb), meoru (Korean wild grapes), and shiitake mushrooms grow naturally in the forest.

 The recreational forest boasts a wide range of convenient facilities including an auto camping site, various woodland nature trails, a campfire site, physical training facilities, and a log house, offering visitors numerous opportunities to relieve their fatigue from the busy routine of urban life. The forest also has a number of attractive subsidiary facilities including a greenhouse, sledding slope, wild flower garden, and 2.6km-long beltway.

Pocheon Art Valley Astronomical Science Museum

Pocheon Art Valley was built as a culture and art complex in an abandoned granite quarry in 2009, and has attracted an increasing number of visitors since the opening of the Pocheon Art Valley Astronomical Science Museum in 2014. The museum consists of three floors and a rooftop area: Exhibition Hall 1, situated on the 1st floor, introduces the earth including its creation and structure; Exhibition Halls 2 and 3, situated on the 2nd floor (which is reached via a staircase and by following a series of images taken by the Hubble space telescope), enable visitors to experience the seasonal constellations using a motion recognition system, and contain an exhibition of the planets of the solar system, various types of telescopes, an infrared light experience and a space exploration simulator; the Planetarium, situated on the 3rd floor, enables visitors to watch a cutting-edge 4D video and constellation; and, finally, the Astronomical Observation Room, situated on the rooftop, is equipped with six telescopes for solar and astronomical observation.

Sanjeong Lake

Located in Sanjeong-ri, Yeongbuk-myeon, Pocheon-si, Sanjeong Lake was thus named as its water is said to be as clear as a mountain (San) well (Jeong). The lake was originally built in 1925 by the Yeongbuk Farmland Improvement Association as a reservoir to supply water to surrounding farmland, and covers approximately 0.24km2.

Dominated by Myeongseongsan Mountain to the north and Gwaneumsan Mountain to the south, the lake attracts visitors throughout the year: It is a hub of water sports in spring and autumn, and boasts a sledding slope for winter vacationers, while a stroll along the nature trail that follows the edge of the lake is the ideal way to take in the splendid surrounding scenery.

The lake is surrounded by numerous attractions and facilities including Sanjeong Falls, Pedestrian Overpass, Sculpture Park, restaurants, an amusement park, Family Hotel, and Jainsa Temple. A water fountain is situated in the middle of the lake.

 Hantangang River Resort

Located in Jeonggok-ri, Yeoncheon-gun, Gyeonggi-do, the Hantangang River was renewed as an eco-friendly cultural resort for families by connecting prehistoric sites with a history and culture village.

The site, which extends for 1.5km along the river between Hantangyo Bridge and Saranggyo Bridge, consists of a caravan camping site, an auto camping site, shops, a football pitch, an outdoor theater, Water Park, Children’s Character Park, and Children Traffic Land under Hantandaegyo Bridge.

In particular, the auto camping site, which is available by reservation only, is characterized as an eco-friendly multipurpose campsite that responds to ever-changing tourism trends such as a leisure activity using automobiles.

The Hantangang River flows from Pyeonggang-gun in North Korea, through Cheorwon-gun and Pocheon-si in South Korea, to Jeongok-ri. Historic relics including Goseokjeong Pavilion and a stone cave which was inhabited by Im Kkeok-jeong, can still be seen by the upper reaches of the river. The Hantangang River is also a popular rafting destination due to its fast-flowing current.
