Gimpo-si in Gyeonggi-do has been a strategically important place where Hangang River flows out to the West Sea. This carries a long history of patriotism, and at the Gimpo Pyeonghwa-Nuri Trail, Koreans can also awaken the spirit of patriotism. Gimpo Pyeonghwa-Nuri Trail is a walking trail that connects the areas bordering the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) in the northernmost parts of Gyeonggi-do. It consists of 12 routes with a total length of 189 km. Among them, three routes (Courses 1–3) run across Gimpo. Course 1, also known as Yeomhagang Barbed-wire Fence Trail, refers to the 14 km long section between Daemyeonghang Port and the South Gate of Munsusanseong Fortress. It takes about 4 hours—20 minutes to get from Daemyeonghang Port to Deokpojin Fort, 2 hours to get to Swaeam-ri Rest Area, 30 minutes to Goyang-ri Rest Area, and 70 minutes to the South Gate of Munsusanseong Fortress—to finish your walking trip.

Most parts of Course 1 run along the barbed-wire fences right next to the Yeomhagang River (Ganghwa Strait). Despite the heartbreaking scenery, you are also greeted with a soothing sight of multiflora roses blooming in the spaces between the fences. You won’t find the walk to be very tedious because there are many things to enjoy along the way, including an observatory and colorful installations created as part of a village art project. If you feel reluctant to finish your journey along the entire trail, you can simply choose to enjoy Course 1. This course is a circular route that connects Deokpojin Fort, Deokpo Village, and Daemyeonghang Port. It takes 1 hour and 20 minutes to finish hiking this 6.5 km route. The most famous historic site in Course 1 is Doekpojin Fort, a military camp built along with Chojijin and Deokjinjin Forts during the Joseon Dynasty to prevent the enemy from reaching Hanyang (present-day Seoul) after passing Ganghwa Strait.
