Maehyang-ri in Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi-do, is a peace village that recovered from the tragic past of the Korean War through reconciliation and harmony. Since 1951, amid the Korean War, this village has been filled with the pungent smell of explosives instead of the scent of plum blossoms, as its name maehyang suggests. The US Air Force had been using Nongseom Island as a target for dropping training bombs, and they stationed around the range since 1954. The following year, the Maehyang-ri Range, commonly known as “Koo-ni Range,” was built. Koo-ni is the English pronunciation of Goon-ri, the former name of Maehyang-ri. This village was witness to over 400 training bomb drops a day until the range was completely shut down in 2005.

To remember the painful past of the village, Maehyang-ri Peace Museum was established. The remains of exploded and unexploded bombs for 54 years were transformed as beautiful works of art. In the name of art and to soothe the pain of the past, the remains of artillery shells were stuck on hooks like meat hanging in a butcher shop, and bomb remnants were piled up like radish during the kimchi-making season. A mural with a girl in a yellow dress watering a red flower sprouting from a pile of bombs became the symbol of Maehyang-ri—a warzone that was reborn as a peace village after overcoming great pain and injury. Currently, a part of Maehyang-ri where the Koo-ni Range was established is being repurposed as a peace eco-park.
