A short fun-filled getaway

If you’re looking to escape the hustle and bustle of Seoul for a fun-filled afternoon of activities, consider going to Uiwang. Located just an hour away by car or 90 minutes by train, Uiwang is home to an exciting zipline and railbike experience next to the beautiful Wangsong lake.

You might be afraid of heights and think that ziplines are not for you, but fret not! A short 30-second ride that gives you an amazing view of the lake will definitely distract you from ever looking down at the ground. It also brings you right to the boarding area for the railbikes so you wouldn’t have to walk from the parking lot to the boarding area.

Many people who go to Uiwang for the railbike take the zipline as well. You sign an indemnity form, take your weight, pay for your ticket and then take an elevator up to the top where you are shackled to a pulley which slides down the zipline.

It’s a really short 30 seconds which takes your breath away. On top of having a bird’s eye view of the lake, you feel the wind, a free sense of falling and a short rush of excitement. Definitely worth the money and the experience of zipping through at a fast speed. Especially if you’re afraid of heights and dare not try skydiving or paragliding, ziplining is the thing for you!

It costs 15,000 won per person.
    · For safety, the maximum and minimum weight required by a person is determined by the wind direction and wind speed on the day itself.
    · On the day I visited, the wind was relatively strong so the minimum weight required was 60 kg and the maximum was 100 kg!

 Railbike – Exercise

A railbike experience seems like a very unique experience exclusive to Korea. However, you may have to travel rather far to ride railbikes. Fortunately, Uiwang is not too far for a daytrip! You may choose to purchase your tickets online via reservation, or buy it on the day itself. The railbikes operate at certain times of the day, so you would need to check the schedule before going down.

You pay purchase the tickets for a 2-seater or 4-seater railbike. Basically, railbikes are 4-seater carts with bicycle mechanisms seated on a railway train track. The 4 (or 2) passengers will pedal forward for the cart to move and you will do that for the full course of the track. It runs roughly around 40 to 50 minutes with a 10-minute break in the middle of the entire course for people to purchase some snacks, take a break or use the washroom.

It may sound or seem easy in the beginning but it will take a toll on your thighs and calves after a while, especially if you’re riding a two-person bike, so be sure to get some stretches in before starting! It won’t be long before you start to break out a sweat!

Prices are different by seater type and day of the week.
    · Weekday: 4-seater (36,000 won) / 2-seater (28,000 won)
    · Weekend: 4-seater (40,000 won) / 2-seater (30,000 won)
    · Online reservations can be done via their website: http://www.uwrailpark.co.kr
    · Check their timetable and match their departure times

Uiwang railbike isn’t just a regular railbike course where you ride around appreciating nature. Yes nature is a given here, but there are also various photozones around that make your adventure more interesting. There are a total of 7 different zones throughout the whole course.

First up would be the flower zone where you go through a tunnel of flowers. Unfortunately, I went in autumn and it was only left with green leaves! But it should be really beautiful in the summer. The next zone is the pop-up museum zone where you have pop-up books enlarged into giant sculptures, serving as a nice photospot along the way. Central station is the area where everyone alights for a short break before continuing.

There is also a photozone, speedzone and mistzone that add a little more fun to the ride as it can get really tiring and repetitive after a while. All in all, it’s a fun activity for the whole family or even for couples. Definitely worth the visit for a quick getaway from the busy lifestyle of Seoul!
