From a Sewage Treatment Station to an Ecological Education Center Malgeumteo Park Ecorium, Osan

Ask any Osan local, and they will tell you that Ecorium Observatory is one of the top landmarks in town. The place used to be a 78 m–high tower of a sewage treatment station. As part of its efforts to restore Osancheon Stream, the government repurposed the treatment station, Malgeumteo Park, and Osancheon Stream to build an ecological education center called “Ecorium.” As a result, the sewage treatment station with unpleasant smells transformed into a place of education about the value of the environment. In particular, the observatory has four floors, each with different groups of exhibits. At the entrance, visitors are greeted by an aquarium, where the former inhabitants of Osancheon Stream from its prepollution days swim side by side with the fish found in the stream today. After the aquarium, visitors can look around various other facilities, such as a gallery displaying the history of Osan from the 1970s to the present day, an augmented reality (AR) room about the future of Osan, and an insectarium showing insects and amphibians found in Osancheon Stream. Besides these attractions, the highlight of the Ecorium tour is the observatory on the top floor. Although this unique space already offers an overview of Osan’s historical sites and artifacts through AR, it’s also the best spot to admire the sunset as it casts its red hue over downtown Osan. Apart from these, there are many things to enjoy across the expansive center premises. Visitors can enjoy sports at the in-line skate track, basketball court, indoor badminton court, or tennis court. In addition, the park has a fountain, an ecological pond, a water playground, and a small chicken and rabbit farm for children. The caravan/campsite in the park is also one of the most popular camping spots in the Seoul Capital Area.
