Namyangju has two royal tombs from the Joseon Period: Sareung and Hongyureung. The Sareung Royal Tomb is the resting place of Queen Jeongsun, the wife of King Danjong. The letter “sa” means “to think” because the queen thought of King Danjong all her life. One of the appeals of the royal tomb is that it is a perfect spot for non–face-to-face tourism experience. The beautiful trails wind through a peaceful pine forest. There are few visitors, which means you are guaranteed some time for yourself. The trails lead to a low-rising hill where anyone can enjoy a leisurely walk without much trouble. The tomb site contains a nursery field that grows trees for the royal palace and the tomb, where visitors can see Korea’s traditional plants, such as wisterias and rough-surface asters.
Located around 2 km away from the Sareung Royal Tomb is the Hongyureung Royal Tomb, which consists of the Hongneung Royal Tomb and the Yureung Royal Tomb. The Hongneung Royal Tomb belongs to Emperor Gojong and Empress Myeongseong, and the Yureung Royal Tomb is the resting place of Emperor Sunjong, Empress Myeonghyo, and Empress Sunjeong. The tombs were built by the Korean Empire, and the types, positions, and number of stone monuments are different from those built by the Joseon Dynasty. For example, the tombs have King’s Bedroom in lieu of the usual T-shaped repository for ceremonial ware. The pine tree and a round pond on the way to the tomb make for tranquil and splendid scenery. The trails leading to the Yeongwon Garden, the Hoeinwon Garden, the tomb of Princess Deokhye, and the tomb of King Uichin stretch from behind the Stele Pavilion. The tombs are easily accessible from the city downtown and filled with flowers and trees that paint different pictures in different seasons, making them perfect spots for a family picnic.
