Healing Hwajeong-dong Mural Village, Goyang-si

Murals Reminding You of Your Hometown Hwajeong-dong Mural Village, Goyang-si

In Deogyang-gu, Goyang-si, there is a lovely village called Hwajeong-dong or kkotbat, meaning flower garden. The name of the village came from the fact that it is located outside the cape that protrudes from the land into the sea. That is why it was originally known as “gotbak” (outside the cape). Because kkotbat sounds similar to gotbak, “Hwajeon” (花田), which means kkotbat or flower garden in Chinese characters, became the more common term for the village. Hwajeon-dong is particularly known for its mural alleys, such as Hwajeon-dong Alley Gallery, Flower Mural Alley, Mural Alley Celebrating the 600th Anniversary of Goyang, Fairytale Mural Alley, Healing Mural Alley, Rainbow Mural Alley, Dalmaji Mural Alley, and Story Mural Alley.
The village walls are full of heartwarming and lovely paintings, like those of white dandelions blooming in a field and of naughty children peeking over walls. As you take a leisurely walk along the village, these beautiful murals will make you feel as if you were in a fairytale you used to read as a child. They are also in perfect harmony with the potted flowers placed along the alleys. The delicious smell of kimchi stew coming from the back will also naturally remind you of the good old days. The most fun activity to do at the Hwajeon-dong Mural Village is playing hidden picture games along the Fairytale Mural Alley. This alley is famous for incorporating the elements of folktales from Goyang into its murals. Visitors can search for hidden objects, such as a snake, matchstick, candlelight, chestnut, and a stubby pencil, in the mural depicting a baby with great strength at Berasan Village. It is great to try finding these hidden items. The trees, plants, and sky, which sit in perfect harmony with the murals, blur the boundary between your reality and the fairy tale–like atmosphere. Take a walk while appreciating the murals, and you will find yourself at the highest point of the village. Here, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the village.
