Anyangsa Temple: The legend of Taejo Wang Geon of Goryeo
  • The name ‘Anyang’ means “a land of happiness where body and mind are peaceful and free”. Anyangsa Temple, whose name originates from the regional name, was built by Taejo Wang Geon (877-943), the founder of Goryeo Dynasty.

It is said that when King Taejo passed through Samseongsan Mountain on his way to conquer the southern area of the country in 900, he was amazed by the five-colored clouds in the sky, met an old monk named Neungjeong, and decided to build a temple here.

  • The Kimchungup Architecture Museum is located at the former site of Anyangsa Temple, which was rebuilt deep inside Samseongsan Mountain. The temple is famous for its splendid dancheong (ornamental painting), which fills up the entire space with colors and designs. The Turtle-shaped Pedestal and the Stupa, which enshrines reliquaries and remains of a deceased monk, stand before Daeungjeon Hall.

Furthermore, the temple grounds contain Myeongbujeon Hall, a Statue of Maitreya Buddha, the Samseonggak (Three Sages) Shrine, and Simgeomdang (Buddhist temple dormitory). Visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of Anyangsa Temple by walking up the staircases on the left-hand side of Daeungjeon Hall and stand in front of the giant Maitreya Statue.
