Gwangmyeong Cave: A fantastic art and culture space located 2km deep in the mine.
  • Precious minerals such as gold, silver, bronze and zinc were mined here between 1912 and its closure in 1972. With a total length of 7.8 kilometers and a depth of 275 meters, the mine comprised eight levels from 0 to 7. According to the records, a total of 52kg of gold was mined here from 1955 to 1972, and it is presumed that before then several hundred kilograms of gold had been mined by the Japanese.

Two impressive sculptures, the Stone Statue of a Miner and the Girl of Peace, located to the left of the entrance to the cave, were made to commemorate the miners and the young girls who were exploited by the Japanese imperialists. The cave also exhibits rusty relics found in the mine and tells vivid stories of the miners who worked there.

  • Upon entering the cave, you will be impressed by the beautiful LED lights and artworks on the theme of “lights to brighten a dark pit”. Furthermore, the Cave Arts Center, Korea’s only cave art and performance space, stages collaborative performances with artists and has seats for 350 persons. The center also organizes a fantastic media façade show.

The cave’s Aquarium, which uses premium natural bedrock water, is Korea’s first in-cave aqua world. It houses rare, native species of fish as well as various species from around the world. Its Geumnyong is particularly popular among visitors as this golden fish is believed to bring wealth and good luck.

Mid way down to level 1 from level 0, you will find the six giant pillars and a golden palace where the cave fairy Aixia holds a gold bar. It is said that if you touch Aixia’s gold bar and say, ‘Shwik shwik hoihoi Aixia’, your wish will come true.
