Yeonmugwan Hall: Where the military practiced their skills
  • The hall was built in 1624 for the fortress-guarding soldiers to hone their skills. In line with the objective, the structure looks powerful and competent. Warriors deemed to have excellent ability were picked and sent to Seoul.

One particularly eye-catching object in Yeonmugwan is a zelkova. The massive, more than 500-year-old tree is a witness to the events that happened in Namhansanseong.

  • Under the tree branches is a little shelter for wearied visitors to catch their breath. It is also a great photo spot where the hall is seen most beautifully. Capture the red architecture standing in stark contrast to the green trees appearing above the stone steps. Next to the military area is the Iateo site, where a government office called Ia or Jeseungheon originally stood. The former huge construction made up of 18 buildings has left no traces apart from the site.
