Daegakjeon Hall: White Jade Sakyamuni Buddha practicing asceticism
  • Daegakjeon Hall is a grand Indian-style white building located at the highest point in the temple precincts. The hall enshrines the world’s largest and only white jade statue of Sakyamuni Buddha practicing asceticism sitting under a Bodhi tree. The body of the statue was hewn from one giant piece of white jade, while the pedestal was made of elegant green jade.

If you want to take a photo with this statue in the background, it is recommended to take a photo from the right side to avoid the reflection from the protective glass.

  • The road leading from the Stone Pagoda of Unification to Daegakjeon Hall offers the best spot to enjoy a splendid panoramic view of Waujeongsa Temple. Near the three-way intersection under Daegakjeon Hall, a mural painting of the Eight Great Events of the Buddha’s Life unfolds like an eight-panel folding screen.

In addition, the Five Hundred Stone Arhats, composed of Buddha’s disciples, are notable for the refined stone carving techniques applied to their facial expressions and physical gestures.
