Dongmakgol Recreation Area

The recreation area is formed in the 7km-long valley, occupying an area of 571,211㎡. Geographically, it is located 2 hours away by car from Seoul, so visitors can make a one-day trip to the park. It is also famous as a filming for the MBC TV drama Wangcho (Street King). The enchanting rocks, natural forest, and caves around the valley show the mystic nature. The reason this place is particularly famous is that cool air, which keeps the ice frozen, flows in summer and warm air can be had in winter. Visitors can see tiny fish that lives only in clear valley water. How about enjoying catching fish with your bare hands with your children? Cooking is allowed here. Jaein Falls, Hantangang Recreation Area, and Jeongok Prehistoric Site are nearby, so it is a perfect place for family-unit travel.

Ueum-do Island

Legend has it that the island is named Ueum-do (meaning the sound of a cow) because the crying sound of a cow was heard from the land or the shape of the island resembles a cow. Some 40 permanent residents live on a 0.42㎢ area. The island has a 2.4㎞-long coastline. Ueum-do used to be in front of Ansan, Gyeonggi-do Province; after the construction of Sihwa Embankment in 1994, however, it became part of the main land. Since there is no school, people rarely move to the island; thus, the nature of the island has been well-preserved. The island produces rice, barley, soy bean, and chili, and blue crabs and shrimps can be caught from the nearby coastal area. In particular, seaweed, rockfish, and clams are the specialty produce of the island.

Anyang River Visitor Center

Thanks to the joint restoration efforts by civic groups from 14 local governments, environmental groups, and government agencies since 1999, the water quality of Anyang River is improving; abundant water is flowing, and various fish species and birds such as minnow, white heron, and night heron return to the stream, so it is reborn as an ecological stream downtown. For the convenience of the citizens, bicycle paths along the stream, man-made wetland, stepping stones, trails, foot acupressure path, basketball courts, and rest areas are installed. The Anyang River Visitor Center introduces a series of observations of kingfisher, king crabs, and winnow as a result of such restoration efforts. The center was established to provide professional monitoring and systematic environmental education and to manage Anyang River based on citizens’ understanding and interest. The center of the exhibition hall introduces an aerial model of the Anyang River area as well as information on the monthly average water quality at major points of Anyang River. Inside the exhibition hall are a small library and an experience facility where visitors can observe birds flying in the skies of Anyang River. On the second floor is an exhibition hall that introduces the history of Anyang River and the sustainable vision of revitalizing Anyang River.

Jungang Market, Anyang

Anyang Jungang Market, which opened on January 5, 1926 during the Japanese occupation period, is located in Manan-gu, Anyang-si, Gyeonggi-do. As a large market with 1150 stores, it is selling fabric, clothing, shoes, vegetables, and food. Since its establishment as a regularly held market on January 5, 1926, it has been dealing with Korean traditional costume, vegetables, industrial products, restaurants, traditional food, and fish. Anyang Market has designated a day of going to a traditional market since June 2008 in order to revitalize the local economy. It is running the Saturday market Tour day and traditional market love day separately.

Dolsuk Ceramic Art Pavilion

Located in Byeongmokan-ro, Anyang-si, Gyeonggi-do, the Dolsuk Ceramic Art Museum displays traditional earthenware and modern pottery. It is exhibiting artworks and collectibles collected by potter Kim Seok-hwan (pen-name: Dolsuk) for the past 50 years, and it is named after the penname of the potter. The potter constructed the museum in March 2008 but passed away in 2012. The museum holds exhibitions as well as cultural, art, and academic events to provide an opportunity for citizens to appreciate ceramic artworks. It has exhibition halls on one basement and three stories aboveground. It also has cafes and seminar rooms. The coffee shop on the second floor of the museum offers a space for visitors to enjoy beautiful natural scenery and artworks. Ceramic artworks carrying Korean sensibility will entice visitors’ mind.

Upcycle Art Center

As a compound word consisting of “upgrade” and “recycle,” upcycle is a more advanced version of the existing “Recycle.” It refers to the regeneration of discarded articles into new products or artwork by adding artistic value. The Gwangmyeong Upcycle Art Center is a complex art space that regularly holds exhibitions, design education, and events under the theme of upcycle (recreating abandoned objects into new products or artwork by adding artistic value). As Korea’s first upcycle base, the Gwangmyeong Upcycle Art Center is operating continuous support projects, exhibitions, experience-oriented educational programs, contests, and performances in order to expand good art to our daily life by creating new use and value instead of simple consumption.

Gwanyang Market, Anyang

The word “Gwanyang” means a sunny spot in Gwanak. The market is not located near a station, but it has great accessibility. Operated by the merchant association, it is divided into 5 sections centering on the chairperson and executive members of the association. Notifications are delivered via the head of each section for systematic operation. The second Tuesday of each month is designated as sale day to offer great prices for customers. The market occupies an area of 7,248m2 and has some 150 stores, selling various products such as agricultural and fishery products, industrial goods, processed food, clothing, fabric, blood sausage and intestines, dried seafood, and flowers.

Here, art events are presented with various concepts. A new theme is selected every month according to the four beautiful seasons – spring, summer, fall, and winter. Nueseom Island in Tandohang Port

Nueseom Island was named as such because the shape of the island resembles silkworm (nue means silkworm). Visitors can use the 1km paved road from Tandohang Port; similar to Jebudo Island, however, visitors can use the road only during ebb tide. Thus, it will be more convenient to check the Jebudo Waterway Schedule when visiting Nueseom Island. Along the path leading to Nueseom Island, three wind generators built by Ansan City are being operated. The lighthouse on the island is very famous. Marine resources are abundant, with oyster, conch, clam, and small octopus caught around the island and shrimp and crabs caught from the coast. Drinking water is available as well.

Bongseonsa Temple

Bongseonsa Temple with several thousand years’ history is located on Unaksan Mountain — one of Korea’s five major famous mountains — in Gyeonggi-do. It used to be a small temple called Unaksa Temple during the reign of King Jungjong of the Goryeo Dynasty, but Queen Jeonghui of King Sejo, the 7th king of the Joseon Dynasty, rebuilt a bigger temple with 89 rooms to commemorate King Sejo’s great achievements and to protect the king’s tomb and renamed the temple Bongseonsa. Bongseon means serving the late kings’ tombs with great care. The temple has the Bronze Bell (Treasure No. 397) and Chilseong taenghwa (Buddhist painting) and Dokseong taenghwa, which were moved to their current location when Wonheungsa Temple outside Dongdaemun Gate was demolished in 1902. It also has a five-story pagoda.

Pyeongchon Jungang Park

The park has some 33,000 trees – including pine trees and ginkgo trees – as well as 78,800 plants on an 11,9667㎡ area. Development was commenced in June 1992 and was completed on December 31, 1993. The park has some 50 art sculptures, sports facilities such as tennis courts, roller skate fields, and basketball courts, and cultural facilities such as playground and outdoor stage to provide relaxation and artistic inspiration. It is also equipped with convenience facilities such as water fountain, washrooms, parking lot, drinking fountain, stores, and benches. It is used as a gathering place for political groups and social groups, but it also holds various concerts to relieve daily stress as well as unique contests and seasonal events. Nearby are Gwanaksan Mountain, Anyang Recreation Area, and Seoul Land, which can be reached within 10 minutes by car from Pyeongchon Station.

SOULONE, Paju

Soul One in Paju means “A place full of laughter.” Since it is surrounded by trees and flowers, visitors can heal their mind and body. Dongducheon Yankee Market, Dongducheon-si

The vicinity of Yankee Market in Dongducheon-si, Gyeonggi-do Province, which used to sell US military uniform and combat ration, has changed to a reminiscence street where visitor can feel the old times during the 1950s to 1960s. The market was formed in front of the US Army base, but it has gotten smaller as the size of the US Army was gradually reduced. Located in Saengyeon-dong, Dongducheon-si, it mainly deals with goods used by the US Army. It is selling military uniforms, daily goods, and camping supplies. Since it also sells vintage items and quality items at reasonable prices such as US Army sleeping bags and Gore-Tex, camping manias will be able to find their favorite goods more from this market than in Hwagae Market.

Seokjangri Art Museum, Yeoncheon

Located on the northernmost end of Korea, Seokjangri Art Museum has a different feel from other art museums downtown. The barbed-wire fences installed along the beautiful Imjingang River tells of the division of the Korean Peninsula. The museum has been expressing the pain of such division in the form of art since 1990. Built by artists, it exhibits artists’ sculptures of people and animals, reminding people of the pristine area of DMZ. It is operating a caravan and a café as well as pension and holding the DMZ Art Festival every year. Since it is equipped with accommodation and convenience facilities such as caravan and café and pension, it provides an opportunity for visitors to enjoy healing in the natural forest.

Jaunseowon Confucian Academy

Jaunseowon Confucian Academy was designated as Gyeonggi-do Monument No. 45 on July 10, 1973. It was established in 1615 (7th year of the reign of King Gwanghye) to commemorate the academic achievement and virtue of Yi I (pen-name: Yulgok) at the suggestion of local Confucian scholars, receiving a plaque with “Jaun” from the king in 1650 (first year of the reign of King Hyojong). Jaunseowon Confucian Academy added the mortuary tablets of Kim Jang-saeng and Park Se-chae in 1713 (39th year of the reign of King Sukjong) and took charge of memorial service and local education, but it was demolished upon Heungseon Daewongun’s order to abolish the Confucian academy in 1868 (5th year of the reign of King Gojong). Later, it was restored using the fund donated by local Confucian scholars and government aid in 1969 and repaired in 1975 and 1976. The shrine is located on a high land; surrounded by stone brick walls, it is accessible through the stairs in front of the main gate. As a 6-kan (unit of measurement referring to the distance between two columns) building with hipped-and-gable roof, it is enshrined with the mortuary tablets of Confucian scholar Yi I as well as the tablets of Kim Jang-saeng and Park Se-chae on both sides. It has a high gate and two side gates on the east and west as well as a monument and the graves of Yi I and his parents on the right and left ridges. It holds ancestral rituals around the middle of August every year.

Yeogang Gallery, Yeoncheon

Located at the corner on the way toward the Typhoon Observatory, Yeogang Gallery was opened in May 2016 in order to use DMZ as a new tourism resource. It is the first art space established in DMZ since the armistice and is the northernmost gallery in Korea. Artist Han Sungpil’s large façade artwork – which incorporates Yeoncheon’s beautiful natural environment into art – and the “Peace Gate,” which contains peace messages from around the world, add to the mystique. The first floor is a permanent exhibition hall that shows the scenery of DMZ, which is not easily accessible to the public, in the form of photos and videos. The cafeteria serves beverages made of local ingredients for visitors who wish to take a rest.

Bongyeongsa Temple, Suwon

Bongnyeongsa is a branch temple of Yongjusa, the main temple of the 2nd diocese of the Korean Buddhist Jogye Order. As a temple for female monks, it was built by State Preceptor Wongak in 1208 (4th year of the reign of King Huijong of the Goryeo Dynasty) and named Seongchangsa Temple but was renamed Bongdeoksa Temple in the early 1400s. The current name was given after Buddhist monk Hyegak Sinmi remodeled the temple in 1469 (1st year of the reign of King Yejong of the Joseon Dynasty). It consists of Daeungjeon Hall, Yaksajeon Hall, Jonggak (bell tower), Geumgangyurwon, Yukhwadang Hall, and Soyosamjangwon. Daeungjeon Hall is enshrined with the statue of Sakyamuni and hanging scrolls behind the Buddha. The Stone Buddha Triad enshrined in Daeungjeon Hall is designated as Gyeonggi-do Tangible Cultural Heritage No.151. The temple has the Buddhist painting of the Vulture Peak Assembly (198*124) and Chilseong Taenghwa (118*144), which were created in 1878. Sinjung Taenghwa (1881) and Hyeonwang Taenghwa (1878) have been designated as Gyeonggi-do Tangible Cultural Heritage No. 152. Temple food As Buddhism settled in Korea, vegetarian cooking started to develop according to the Buddhist discipline.Temple food, which is based on Buddhist teachings and Buddhist culture’s wisdom, values our attitude and method of consuming food. In contemporary times, temple food has become a healthy food culture. During the Goryeo period when Buddhism was fostered, various foods were developed particularly vegetable oil and spices. Various kinds of tteok (rice cake), cooking methods, and processing methods as well as preserved foods such as kimchi and preserves developed as well. Thanks to Buddhist events such as Palgwanhoe and lotus lantern festival, tea sacrificial ceremony became popular, and ritual foods such as tea ceremony and refreshments developed accordingly. Due to the Buddhist suppression policy during the Joseon period, however, Buddhist food did not develop much. The tea culture receded, but non-alcoholic beverages such as soup cooked with aromatic herbs, punch, sikhye (sweet rice drink), and sujeonggwa (cinnamon punch) developed. As Korean Buddhism became popular, temple food became known along with local foods. Bongnyeongsa temple food Bongnyeongsa Temple is operating a temple food education center and the Seju Buddhist Cultural Center with the goal of understanding and studying Buddhist culture and maintaining a healthy food culture. In particular, Bongnyeongsa Temple is offering experiences with temple food through the temple food educational center for visitors to appreciate all living creatures while tasting food created in harmony with nature and to wish for peace for the world. It is holding the Bongnyeongsa Temple food contest every year and posting temple food recipes created from modern sensibility on its homepage to get closer to the public.

Young Green House, Pocheon

Among Korea’s famous cartoons is a cartoon called Geomjeong Gomusin (Black Rubber Shoes). The setting of the cartoon is the late 1960s when Koreans lived poorly yet happily. The cartoon depicts the growing-up stories of brothers Gi-cheol and Gi-young. Created by brother cartoonists Lee Woo-young and Lee Woo-jin, it was a popular cartoon loved by all generations. The Young Green House offers special experiences as well as a play space under the theme of the cartoon. The house is the birthplace of the two brothers in the cartoon, becoming a space that offers various experiences of black rubber shoes. Guri Traditional Market

The market is the only traditional market remaining around Guri and Namyangju. It is a specialty market with a long history of 50 years. As a result of rapid population concentration in Seoul during the 1960s, Guri became a satellite city, and Guri Traditional Market started to be fostered in the 1980s. Deokpyeong Dinosaur Museum (Arboretum)

Deokpyeong Dinosaur Museum is located at the foot of Dongmaegisan Mountain where Beombawi Cave can be found.
