Jarasum Island

Jarasum Island was formed as a result of the construction of Cheongpyeong Dam in 1943. The island used to be called ‘China Island’ as the area was cultivated by a community of Chinese people after Korea’s Liberation, but it was renamed ‘Jarasum’ in 1986 because it faces a hill named ‘jaramok’ (jara means terrapin in Korean), which is said to resemble a terrapin as it sinks underwater and re-emerges like a terrapin whenever it rains. Now, the island, which is beloved by campers, is well-known as one of Korea’s best campsites. Jarasum Island is also famous for the Jarasum International Jazz Festival, which is held every autumn in Jungdo on Jarasum Island. This exciting event attracts a diverse audience and provides spectators with many unforgettable memories. Over 1,440,000 people attended the 10th festival held in 2013. The island is also the venue for the annual Jarasum Winter Festival, which is held every January around Jarasum Island, offering diverse winter programs such as Trout Ice Fishing, Snow Sledging, and Ice Sledding.
