Ilsan Bamgasi Thatched-roof House

Ilsan Bamgasi Thatched-roof House located at Haetsal-ro, Ilsandong-gu in Goyang-si dates from the late Joseon period. As many chestnut trees grow in the area, the house was built mainly with wood from a nearby chestnut tree, hence its name, Bam Gasichoga (‘bam’ means chestnut). The house’s most distinctive feature is its roof, which has a round open hole in the part extending over the middle of the front yard. As the house retains the typical features of thatched-roof houses built in the Ilsan area during the late Joseon Dynasty, it is regarded as a valuable cultural heritage. The house has been designated as Gyeonggi-do Folklore Material No.8.
