Hwasanseowon Confucian Academy was designated as Gyeonggi-do Monument No. 46 on September 5, 1975.

It was built by local Confucian scholars in 1635 (13th year of the reign of King Injo of Joseon) in order to commemorate the academic achievement and virtue of Yi Hang-bok, who was a famous retainer during the mid-Joseon Dynasty. It received the signboard “Hwasan” from the king in 1729 (46th year of the reign of King Sukjong of Joseon). It played an important role in the holding of sacrificial rites for deceased Confucian saints and offering education in the community. It was demolished in 1868 (5th year of the reign of King Gojong of Joseon) as a result of Regent Daewongun’s decree of abolishing Confucian academies, and memorial tablets were buried in front of the graves and recovered in 1971.

After passing the national examination on liberal arts in 1580 (13th year of the reign of King Seonjo of Joseon), Yi Hang-bok assumed several high-ranking government positions and served as the Minister of War during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592, contributing to the reorganization of the military and eradication of the Japanese army. After the war, he was appointed prime minister of the Joseon dynasty, and he has become a symbol of a clean government official.
