Don’t think too much about your travel destination, just turn your eyes to nearby Bucheon, which has gemlike places here and there like Bucheon Art Bunker B39, a spectacular building itself , and Dodang Arboretum, a resting place amid the busy downtown, etc.

1. Bucheon Art Bunker B39, a culture and art playground created in the former waste incineration plant

In April this year, a refined space for culture and arts was opened in the former waste incineration plant in Samjeong-dong. As a result, the following transformations were realized: the road for garbage trucks, into a multimedia hall; the waste incineration plant, into an outdoor exhibition hall; and the yard for iron pipes and machines, into a gallery café. The place that has been transformed from a waste incineration plant into a space of culture and arts, Bucheon Art Bunker B39 won the Grand Prize in the 2018 Korea Public Architecture Award.

Let’s solve the puzzle of the name Bucheon Art Bunker B39. The name was made with B standing for Bucheon, waste Bunker, and Borderless communication. Then what is 39? The key lies in the waste Bunker, which became the inspiration for the name of the place. The bunker positioned majestically at the left end of the building is where the wastes of Bucheon were gathered from 1995 to 2010. It has massive depth since it treated 200 tons of wastes a day. The number 39 stands for the depth of the bunker. The steel gate where the wastes were dumped and the walls of the bunker remain as a symbol of the building.

Now that the puzzle has been solved, it’s time to enjoy the exhibition. The charm of Bucheon Art Bunker B39 is that it is possible to see traces of the former incineration plant and the current exhibition together. The central outdoor garden called Air Gallery used to be the incinerator that burned wastes in the past. Unique performances including the performance of electronic music of Lucas Paris were held here. Entering the building again, you can naturally see the products on display along the corridor, and here and there in the café. You can enjoy the exhibition while leisurely eating the snack sold at Cafe B39 such as coffee, sandwich, and pasta. Besides, old facilities including the manned ventilation room, crane control room, and central control room are preserved in their original forms.

2. Café Alle serving delicious desserts in an antique atmosphere

Getting out of Bucheon Art Bunker B39 and walking along Garosu-gil Road into the calm alley in the residential area, you can see the signboard “Alle serving the cake of happiness.” It really is the “cake of happiness” as I can feel my happiness index rising just by selecting from the many cakes put on the display stand. The name fits the professional cake shop.

Alle first opened as a baking studio and reopened last year as a professional café with handmade cakes. Pets are allowed in the store, and you can frequently see customers drinking coffee in sweat suits accompanied by their pets. The owner who bakes cakes is a resident of the community, and most of the customers visiting this place are neighbors as well.

All cakes are baked on the very day with a special healthy recipe. More than 10 kinds of cakes are made by hand including the mugwort cake, bean powder roll, and black sesame mousse cake. You can also have a taste of the cake filled with seasonal fruit materials such as raspberry, peach, and citron. Call in advance since the cakes on the display stand differ from day to day.

Let’s have a taste of special beverages to go along with the sweet cakes. Popular beverages are mugwort latte, red bean latte, and those combining bitter espresso with matcha, red tea, soybean milk, strawberry, etc. Any table is good with the antique chairs and tables and delicate lighting, but on a sunny day the best table is the one beside the window with the wavy lace curtain. The private space inside the shop is good for spending some me time.

3. Dodang Arboretum Dullegil with wavy autumn wild flowers and flame grass flowers

Now it’s time to burn the calories gained from the sweet cake. The forest filled with phytoncide looks better than the wide street. Dodang Neighborhood Park is a place where you can smell the fresh forest near the busy downtown. You can see the scenery of autumn by walking just a few steps out of the grey apartment complex.

Dodang Arboretum located within the park is filled with autumn wild flowers and flame grass flowers. The wetland garden with small ponds, red flower garden with wavy flame grass flowers, fragrant ornamental plant arboretum, wild grass and flower garden, etc. are gathered in a cluster. The size of the arboretum is small, and it takes only about 10 minutes to walk around it. The pretty scene of the arboretum makes the benches natural photo zones. There are several forest paths in the arboretum, and you may take whichever route you want. The deck road of the healing forest is filled with thick trees that you will forget that you are in the middle of downtown. Walking a little further, you will get to the observatory where you can see an open view of the park and the downtown at a glance.

Don’t miss the One Million Rose Garden in front of the arboretum. You will be charmed by the unexpected fragrance of roses. They say that rose is the “Queen of May,” but autumn rose is as beautiful as spring rose. While the rose in May is colorful and fresh, the autumn rose is elegant and pure.
