Jarasum International Jazz Festival 2016
As Korea’s representative jazz festival, the Jarasum International Jazz Festival is held every year during early October for three days. Some 10 stages will be installed in the vicinity of Jarasum Island and Gapyeong-eup in Gapyeong-gun, and top-class jazz artists from all over the world will perform on the stage surrounded by a beautiful natural environment. Over the past 12 sessions, many artists from 40 countries performed, revitalizing international exchanges. In addition, the Focus Project by Country, which introduces a different country every year intensively, is operated through a close relationship with the embassy or cultural center of each country. Major festivals of Asia’s jazz scenes such as Malaysia’s “Penang Island Jazz Festival,” Japan’s “Takatsuki jazz street,” and “Sukiyaki Meets the World Festival” are held annually based on MOU. As a project for the development of Korean jazz, the “Jarasum Creative Music Camp” and “Jarasum International Jazz Competition” are held in alternate years to discover and foster promising jazz talents. The Jarasum International Jazz Festival has been selected as an excellent cultural tourism festival by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism for four consecutive years. In 2014, it was selected as the best festival and designated as an honorary ambassador for green life by the Ministry of Environment. During the festival, Jazz Makgeolli, Jazz Wine, and Vin Chaud made with the local produce of Gapyeong are produced and sold to revitalize the local economy. During the festival, 48 teams from 25 countries present the essence of jazz. The Jarasum International Jazz Festival began in the Netherlands in 2011, followed by Poland in 2012, Sweden in 2013, and Norway in 2014, and then Germany last year.
