Grape Festivals in September

grape4

No doubt, the most representative seasonal fruit of August and September is grapes. Grapes are good for relieving fatigue since they contain lots of fructose; they are also effective in restoring energy with their abundant nutrients such as organic acid. Nowadays, many people enjoy grapes all year round by extracting juice from grapes and recover fast from fatigue. Resveratrol, a substance contained in grapes, has excellent anti-cancer effect. Grapes are very effective in discharging waste matter and removing toxins from the body; they also help restore the balance of the body by removing dead cells. In addition, grapes have an excellent detoxification function. They also contain flavonoid, which is a phyto substance. The substance is effective in preventing and improving age-related diseases such as high blood pressure and arteriosclerosis by promoting blood circulation and by controlling the formation of blood clots. With improved blood circulation, it also relieves edema. Since grapes are high in iron, they are good for preventing anemia. In particular, they help increase the effects of medicine and facilitate the absorption of medicine into the body especially calcium; they are also good for osteoporosis since they are rich in vitamins C and D and reduce the absorption of sodium that weakens the bones. In addition, grapes relieve hunger and feeling of cold by energizing the body and promote urination with its diuretic function.

Hwaseong Songsan Grape Festival

A long hot summer with little rain and abundant sunlight produces good grapes. The low land along the Yellow Sea Coast does not get a lot of rain because clouds simply pass by the area. Thus, the area has the perfect climate for producing good-quality grapes with high sugar content. The Songsan area in Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi-do is famous for the excellent quality of its grapes. In the Songsan, Seosin, and Mado areas, there are some 965 hectares of vineyards. Some 1,600 farms are producing 22,000 tons of grapes each year. At least 87% of the entire farms are producing organic grapes.

In late summer every year, Hwaseong-si holds a festival to promote the excellence of “Songsan Grapes” harvested from Songsan, a famous mountain in Hwaseong. In the venue of the festival, various exhibitions and experience-oriented activities such as grape show, grape fishing, grape stomping experience, wine foot bathing, wine making experience, wine tasting, and Songsan grape farmers’ market are held.

In 2015, <Hwaseong Grape Festival>, which boasts of sweet grapes due to abundant sunlight and sea winds along the coast of the West Sea, was held for two days from August 29 to 30 in Songsan-myeon Songsan Agricultural Cooperative Market, Mado Traditional Market, and Seosin-myeon Gungpyeong Port, offering various participatory events such as grape singing contest, grape tasting, harvesting, and wine tasting experiences. In Hwaseong, some 563 farms are producing 8,700 tons of grapes from a 412 hectares land, and 87% of the entire farms are producing organic grapes.

Ansan Daebudo Grape Festival has been held since 1995 in order to advertise the excellence of grapes produced by Daebudo Island. Even though grapes have been produced since 1954, full-blown production began in 1980. The festival is held once every two years during odd-numbered years. With farmers earning more since the cultivation of grapes, an area of 400 hectares is currently producing grapes. In fact, grapes are the key produce of this area. The texture and fragrance of grapes are excellent, and their sugar content is 17 degrees or 4-5 degrees higher compared to grapes produced in other areas. The farmers are mainly growing the Campbell and Kyoho varieties.

In 2015, the Parking Lot No. 1 of Daebu Sea Breeze Theme Park was used as the main festival venue for two days between September 12 and 13. The festival features various auxiliary events such as farmers’ market selling Daebudo grapes and wine, Daebudo five-sense event (King grape stomping, natural dye, fishing, making grape rice cake), and citizens’ singing contest for visitors to see and experience things. The festival will be a great opportunity for visitors to purchase fresh Ansan grapes at reasonable prices in the farmers’ market.

Anseong Machum Grape Festival

AnseongMachumGrapeFestival8

Grapes were introduced to Anseong for the first time in Korea. Thus, it is fair to say that the 110-year Korean grape history is the history of Anseong Grapes. The history began in 1901 with 20 Muscat grape vines brought by Antonio Combert from France, who was the first Catholic priest in Anseong. When the vines were planted in the front courtyard of the cathedral, the history of Korean grapes began. Catholicism began to spread through children who came to the cathedral to taste a Western fruit, grapes. More than 65% of Seoun-myeon, which is a town of grapes, is growing Anseong grapes with Seounsan Mountain of Charyeong Ridge as its background. The cultivation area of grapes in Seoun-myeon is approximately 700 hectares, and the entire village is like a giant grape farm. Due to the temperature difference between day and night and little rain in Anseong, the grapes have high sugar content and strong fragrance. In particular, the quality of Kyoho grapes from Seoun-myeon is excellent because the soil and climate of Anseong-si are perfect for growing grapes. The village boasts of the largest production of grapes in Gyeonggi-do, and more than its production is sold directly to consumers.

Held at the Grape Museum every September, “Anseong Machum Grape Festival” aims to promote Anseong grapes. The greatest attraction of the festival is the fragrant Kyoho grapes, but visitors can also taste different varieties of grapes, such as Muscat Hamburg, Rosario Bianco, Alexanderia, and Manicure Finger.

When the Korea-Chile FTA was concluded in 2005, Anseong Grape Museum was established in order to increase the competitiveness of grape farmers and to show the 110-year history of Korean grapes. “Châteauan,” a grape processing brand of Anseong, represents Anseong grapes after finishing its trademark registration. 13-degree “Combe Rose Wine” and 35-degree “Combe Whisky” are representative wine made with Anseong grapes. In front of the Grape Museum is a grape coach, the most popular experience tour for visitors to experience the warmth and grapes of vineyard farms as they harvest grapes and ride a sleigh.

In 2015, the Anseong Machum Grape Festival was held from September 12 to 13 at the foot of Seounsan Mountain. The festival is a perfect event for families to enjoy since it holds various performances, experience-oriented events, couch trekking, grape-tasting event, and grape fishing event. At the Kyoho grape farms of Anseong-si, visitors can taste delicious grapes and buy them at reasonable prices.
