2015 7th World Temple Food Festival

 Oct. 2nd – 3rd, 2015

As a 1000-year-old temple representing Gyeonggi-do Province, Bongnyeongsa was a royal court temple built by State Preceptor Wongak in 1208 in the 4th year of the reign of Goryeo Dynasty’s King Huijong. It has served as an institution for practicing asceticism in fostering nun monks for the past 40 years since Monk Seju Myoeom, who is a living witness of modern Korean Buddhist nun monks, opened a nun monk college and the Geumgang Yulhak Nun Monk Graduate School in the temple. Since Monk Myoeom held the 1st Temple Food Feast in 2009 under the theme 『The Flavor of Nature, The Sharing Mind』, the feast has been upgraded to an international festival in 2013; it is being fostered as cultural content representing Gyeonggi-do and Suwon-si. To ascetics, food is a means of practicing the ideology of respecting life, nature, and harmony and of appreciating the limitless relations such as earth, water, sunlight, wind, and farmers’ labor until the food we consume today is produced. Temple food no longer remains in temples; rather, it is becoming recognized as an excellent alternative meal for modern people who are forgetting the flavor of nature and who are losing health as a result of consuming too much instant and processed food. It contributes to correcting the wrong food culture and to improving the life of modern people.
