Petite France European Puppet Festival
July 17 – August 23
Petite France, a small French village in Gapyeong, is about one hour’s drive from Seoul. The surrounding landscape of mountains, including Homyeongsan and Bukhansan, is an unforgettable vista. In the spring, the green leafy trees, the glistening stream, and the wild flowers’ diverse colors create a breathtaking panorama.
The village holds the second annual European Puppet Festival from July 17 until August 23. Led by a 3.2-meter tall marionette, the parade of puppets with a spectacular array of bubble cars and drummers will guarantee to attract anyone’s attention. The parade will march through the open square to a cheerful melody, and the puppets will have a group dance in the open square at the end. A miniature version of the puppet festival originally held in France, the event with a charming atmosphere makes visitors feel as if they are in Europe. Other features include Puppet Show Pinocchio and Hansel & Gretel, the playing of the orgel (French music box), street musicians playing the accordion, French movies, and special performances on the weekends.
This year’s festival provides visitors with a hands-on opportunity to make their own marionettes. An adorable ostrich puppet can be made by assembling pieces of colored wooden pieces and connecting them with a string. The stage for the puppet show also serves as a photo zone for visitors. Visitors can make their own wood art where they can paint the main character of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s The Little Prince that is already sketched on a wooden plate with their colors of preference. The festival also offers a separate hands-on experience where visitors can paint a plaster figure of the little prince from the classic novella, and paint the character’s curly hair, fashionable muffler on the neck and other details to make it their own.
